Chapter 11: Terms

We rode back to Stonefell in silence, and Maud read the second page by lantern light in the carriage.

It was short.

A false bond could be cut without killing the wolf if a true one stood ready to take her weight. The Moon's mark must be answered, in the flesh, in the Moon's own light.

Maud folded it shut and said nothing else.

She did not have to.

I had until tomorrow's dusk.

The yard was empty when we came in, and the wolves had gone to their beds out of courtesy.

Bram walked me to the east tower.

He stopped on the landing outside my door, and he did not touch me.

"I'll sleep in the hall," he said. "You don't owe me anything for this."

"I'm not paying a debt."

"Hesper."

"Nothing touches but the fight." I turned to face him. "That's what I said, on the first morning."

"I remember."

"I want you to take it back."

He stood very still with his hand on the stone wall.

His eyes were dark, and they did not leave my face.

"Say it plainly," he said.

"I want you to fuck me, Bram."

The breath went out of him.

"I don't want it because of the mark or the leash or the Moot. I want it because I've been thinking about your mouth for three days."

"I'll tell you something," he said, rough. "I thought about yours at the altar."

"Then stop thinking."

He crossed the landing in one stride and had me against the door.

His mouth came down on mine, hard, and I opened to it.

He tasted of smoke and cold air, and I dragged my hands up through his hair and held on.

He made a low sound in his throat, the one from the yard, and my wolf answered it under my ribs.

The door gave behind me, and we went into the room together.

He kicked it shut and threw back the shutters, and the moon lay across the floor.

I pulled at the buttons of his shirt until it came open, and I put my palms on his chest, on the mark over his heart.
