Chapter 9: Bram's POV

Bram's POV

My chest had burned since the altar.

I had told myself it was the cold chamber, or the silver in the air, or a rib I'd cracked in some border scrap and forgotten.

Then she said Aldane, and the burn ran the whole width of my chest.

I had stood in a council hall with twelve old men and a man I wanted to kill, and I had known.

I did not say it.

You do not say a thing like that over a woman chained to an altar.

I said, "Say it again."

Now I stood at the cellar door in the grey afternoon with a lantern, looking at Corwin through the bars.

He sat on the stone bench with his bad arm across his lap.

He had been given bread and water, and he had eaten neither.

"Warden," he said, hoarsely. "You'll want to hear something."

"I want to hear nothing from you."

"You'll want to hear this."

He looked tired. For the first time in the twelve years I had known him, he looked like a man.

"I carried the torch at Aldane," he said. "I won't deny it. He ordered it, and I did it."

"You'll say that before the council."

"I'll say it to anyone you like. I've been saying it to myself every night for seven years."

I said nothing.

He leaned toward the bars.

"There's a thing you don't know. Nobody does but me and the old woman, and she doesn't know what she saw."

"Go on."

"The nails."

"What nails?"

"He had me dig the graves in the chapel orchard. A hundred and four, in rows. Then he came out at night with a bag of silver nails and a bowl of blood."
