Chapter 19: Without the Season
On a gray Sunday at the end of February I woke at noon with Alexis's hand between my legs.
I had not set an alarm in six weeks.
"Good morning," he said into my hair.
"It's noon."
"Good noon."
I laughed and pushed back against his hand, and found him hard against my backside.
Remy lay on my other side, awake, propped on one elbow, watching me with his beard crushed flat on one cheek.
Hugo was sprawled across the foot of the bed with his glasses on his chest and his notebook open beside his ear.
There was no heat in my blood.
There was only wanting, plain and ordinary and enormous, and it rose in me as easily as breath.
"I have an idea," I said.
"Dangerous," said Hugo, from the foot of the bed.
"Hugo, give me your scarf."
He sat up, blinking.
He pulled the gray wool scarf from the bedpost and held it out.
"Tie it over my eyes," I said.
Nobody breathed.
"Mireille," said Remy.
"I want to prove something. For six years I couldn't tell what any of you were thinking. Now I can."
I lay back.
"Tie it."
Hugo tied it, and his fingers shook at the knot.
The world went dark and wool-soft, and I heard the bed creak as the three of them shifted.
"Now what?" Alexis whispered.
"Now you touch me, one at a time. And I tell you who it is."
A hand came down on my stomach.
It was broad and warm and slow, with calluses I knew.
"Remy," I said.
The hand squeezed, and a low laugh answered.
Another hand touched my ankle and slid up the inside of my calf, light and teasing.
"Alexis," I said.
"How do you do that?" he asked.
"You're grinning so hard I can feel it in my own ribs."
Then a mouth touched the inside of my wrist, careful and quiet, and a thumb pressed my pulse.
"Hugo," I said.
His breath caught.
"That's cheating," he whispered. "That's the bond."
"It is not. That's you."
Hands came from everywhere.
They stroked my thighs and my ribs and the soft hollow behind my knee.
A mouth closed over my left nipple, and another over my right, and a third kissed along my hipbone.
I arched off the sheets, helpless in the dark.
I could not tell whose mouth was whose, only that they were all on me.
Their want and mine twined together in my chest until I could not find the seam.
