Chapter 16: The Lodge

The snow closed the road on Friday, and I was in the lodge by then.

I had not planned it.

I would like to say I was moved there against my will, since it would be a cleaner story.

On the morning after the closet the charge nurse spoke to me over the chart.

"Your man in the cap says the road to Old Forge will be shut by tonight," she said.

"He isn't my man," I said.

"Then he's somebody's. Go and get some sleep somewhere with a bed."

Valentine came to the staff door at seven with the car and the bag.

He had the face of a man expecting to be hit.

"The lodge isn't a cage," he said. "I'm asking."

It was not the same question.

He had asked it differently, with the door open and his hand off the car.

I looked at the snow beginning in the gray sky and thought of the cot behind the lockers.

"Two nights," I said. "Then back to the ward."

"Two nights."

"And I choose which room."

"All of them," he said. "Any."

It was a log house at the end of a mile of unplowed road, with a stone chimney and a stuffed elk head over the door.

He said the elk had belonged to his grandfather, who had shot it at a bad angle.

I laughed.

It was the first time in three days, and it surprised us both.

Inside there was a long room with a fire already laid, a kitchen, and a staircase to two bedrooms under a pitched roof.
