Chapter 17: Christmas Eve
Kerensa's POV
Torsten called me at nine, and I was at the Long Island gate by eleven.
The thumb scanner on the post lit green for me.
The new guard stared at the screen and then at his boots.
Edgar sat in the passenger seat with a folder on his knees.
Torsten stood waiting at the foot of the front steps with a brass key ring in his hand.
"She's in the study," he said.
"With a lawyer. They've been in there two hours."
"Does she have a weapon?"
"She has a folder," Torsten said.
"That's worse."
I walked into my father's study without knocking.
Lydia sat in my father's chair.
A man in a long coat stood over the desk with a page in each hand.
"Ms. Wren," he said.
He said it with relief and dread at once.
"I'm told I should speak to you."
"Speak to me," I said.
"Ms. Stuyvesant believes this house is part of a family trust and she is its heir by blood," the lawyer said.
"She believes the loan on it is invalid, because it was made by a company with a false name."
"Wren is my grandmother's maiden name," I said.
"Wren Holdings has filed under it for five years. Every state office has it on record. Your own firm wrote my attorneys three letters about it last spring."
He looked at the second page in his hand.
He read it again, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.
"I believe I've been misinformed," he said.
"You were," I said.
He snapped his briefcase shut.
"I'm withdrawing from this matter, Ms. Stuyvesant," he said to Lydia.
"There's nothing here I can do."
He left without looking back.
