Chapter 24: The Last Page
On Monday at 12:40, I sat at the library desk and watched the third-floor copier from across the atrium.
It had a new paper sign taped to its lid, in Dani's blocky printing.
"MAKE YOUR OWN."
Under it, somebody had added in pencil, "Seriously."
"You're staring," Dani said.
"I'm not."
"You're staring, and you have an expression."
"What expression?"
"The one where you want to be mean to a photocopier and can't think of anything." She stamped a book. "Ellis incoming. Be nice or be silent."
He was pushing a cart of returns, and he stopped at the end of the desk.
He had cut his hair, though not by much, and the lanyard was straight.
"Hearing was this morning," he said.
"And?"
"I keep my place. I keep the probation. I keep the desk, so nine more weeks of Dani calling me names." He pulled a folded paper out of his jacket. "And this came back in Statistics."
It was the first quiz of the new unit.
At the top, in red pen, was a 71.
Under it the professor had written, "Own work. Good."
I held it for a moment.
"Ellis," I said.
"I know it's not a ninety."
"It's yours."
"That's what Micah says." His mouth moved at one corner. "He makes me explain every problem back to him until I want to throw the pencil."
"Good."
He nodded.
He took the paper back and put it away, and for once he did not look like someone waiting to be hit.
"I'm proud of you," I said. "I want you to hear that. I still don't forgive you."
"I know."
"No. Hear the rest. I don't forgive you yet."
