Chapter 20: Kip's Last Move
The flashlight tapped twice on my back window.
I lowered it three inches with a hand I could not keep steady.
A security guard in a gray jacket bent down and looked in.
He was fifty, tired, and holding a thermos.
"Ms. Szymanski," he said. "Mr. Hollister."
"Good evening," said Drake, in the voice he uses for budget meetings.
"The lights on Two are on a motion sensor. They've been coming on late."
"Late," I said.
"I saw the car shaking and I thought the battery was going."
"The battery's fine," I said.
"Good." He straightened. "Drive safe."
He walked off, whistling, and I put my forehead down on Drake's shoulder and shook.
"He knew," said Drake.
"He knew."
"He said the car was shaking."
"I'm moving to another state," I said.
On Friday morning I was still laughing about it, until I walked into 4B at 8:15 and saw Laney's face.
She stood by the whiteboard with her phone in one hand and a printed email in the other.
She had no lanyard on.
"Sit," she said. "Both of you."
"What happened?" said Drake.
"Kip sent an email to the board at six this morning. He copied the executive team. Odette got it at six-oh-one."
She laid the printout on the table.
It was three sentences long.
The subject was "Process concern ahead of the Summit."
Under it, in a neat gray box, was the VARIANCE Q4 spreadsheet, all six pages.
"It says he's raising it for the company's protection," Laney said. "It says the process has been compromised by a personal relationship between the finalists."
