Chapter 14: The Descent

The first thing the sea took from me was the light.

The dock lamp went to a coin, then a speck, then nothing, and the water turned the black of the inside of a closed fist.

I screamed, and it came out as a string of bubbles that raced upward and left me behind.

Velun's tail curled around my legs.

"Sorcha." His voice carried through the water as clearly as it had through the chat. "Look at me."

I looked.

His eyes had lit, gold and steady, two lanterns an arm's length from my face.

"Keep them in front of you," he said. "I will not go anywhere you cannot see."

"Okay."

"Breathe out."

I breathed out.

"Breathe in."

The cold sweet water filled me, and my heart slowed from a gallop to a canter.

"I hate this," I said.

"I know."

"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever hated."

Sethra swam ahead of us, a pale streak, and we went down.

The water changed as we sank.

It lost the green and then the blue.

Things drifted through the glow of Velun's eyes, jellyfish, a long ribbon of silver fish that parted around us and closed behind.

My ears popped, and I swallowed, and they stopped hurting.
