Chapter 20: The Demo

"Does he know you're here?" I said.

"No." Cody slid into the booth across from me without being asked. "He'd kill me. Well. He'd look at me sadly. It's worse."

Gwen was kneeling in the coffee on the floor, picking up glass and staring at him.

"Gwen," I said. "Your hand."

She'd cut her thumb.

She didn't notice.

"That's Cody Rains," she said to nobody. "In my booth."

"Hi," Cody said. "Sorry about your pot."

The whole diner was listening.

The church ladies at the corner table had stopped eating.

The owner had come out of the kitchen with a rag in her hand.

Cody turned the phone so it faced me.

It was a text thread between him and one other person.

The contact was saved as JAS.

"August twelfth, last year," Cody said. "Two in the morning."

There was an audio file.

row f rough.

Under it, three messages from JAS.

"Don't ever release this."

"Don't play it for anybody. Not the guys. Not Hal."

"I just needed one person to hear it before I tell her."

I read the last line again.

Before I tell her.

"I listened to it forty times," Cody said. "In a hotel bathroom in Nashville so the guys wouldn't hear. It was just him and a guitar. It was the best thing he ever wrote."
