Chapter 9: The Ninth Floor
Mo Chenyao pressed nine in the lift because his finger wanted to, and the doors opened on the dark.
It was the old design floor.
Greywater had kept it as a storeroom, with the desks pushed to the walls under dust sheets and the windows papered over with blinds.
He walked out into it with his shoes loud on the boards.
Forty desks had stood here once.
His had been by the east window, third from the end.
He stood in front of the place where it was and could not make himself breathe properly.
"They moved your desk," said a voice behind him.
Yu had followed him down by the stairs.
He stood in the lift lobby with his shirt buttoned wrong and his jacket in his hand.
His face in the grey light was bare.
"I know. I can see."
"It's in the basement," said Yu.
"I don't want it."
"I kept it."
"Why?" said Mo.
Yu said nothing.
Mo turned all the way round.
The old fury came up through his chest and out of his mouth in a voice he didn't recognise.
"You stood there." He pointed at the aisle between the desks. "Right there. A Friday."
"I had a coffee in my hand, because I thought I was being called in about the expansion, and you didn't say good morning."
"You read something off a page," said Mo. "You said my name and the word cause and the word immediately."
"Mo," said Yu.
"Forty people. Jiang was crying. Half the art team were crying."
"I asked you what I had done," said Mo, "and you didn't answer."
"You looked at the wall over my shoulder while a security guard I'd bought dumplings for carried my box to the lift."
