Chapter 7: The Fourth Watch
The slip said more, and Ja-heon read it three times by the dying candle.
"Our word is changed.
"Do not use the needle.
"Bring the Crane out by the south gate before the fourth watch, alive, to the cedar milepost on the marsh road.
"Men will be waiting.
"You will not be needed after."
He turned the paper over.
The back was blank.
The handwriting was his lord's, but the words were not.
Ja-heon had read Pyo's letters for twenty years.
Pyo's letters had always been open and generous.
This was cold and final.
You will not be needed after.
Ja-heon lay on his back with his husband asleep on his chest and went over what he knew.
At the shrine, two nights ago, Pyo had said Ja-heon would come home and have a room waiting.
Something had changed since then, and it was not Pyo who had changed it.
Someone had ordered the Crane handed over alive.
Someone had decided Ja-heon was a loose end.
The loose end would be cut off at the milepost, in the dark, by men he would never see.
He had been a good dog for twenty-two years.
He was not going to die like a dog.
He slid out from under Seon-woo as gently as he could and got up.
He picked his wedding coat off the floor.
His fingers found the hem of the left sleeve and tore the stitches, and the red needle fell into his palm.
It looked very small.
He laid it on the quilt next to the slip.
Then he knelt on the floor beside the bed, naked, put his forehead on the boards, and said the name.
"Seon-woo."
Seon-woo woke at once.
He always woke at once, and Ja-heon had counted on it.
