Chapter 7: The Truck Bed

Cade's POV

She had my belt open before I got the tailgate shut.

I had parked under the big live oak at the bend in the creek, on my own ground, where the road gave out.

The moon was up, and the leaves above us made a loose black roof.

In the bed of the truck I had spread two quilts and a wool blanket.

She had said she wanted the stars, and I had not forgotten what else she said.

"Boots," Tilly said, and stood over me.

I sat on the tailgate and pulled them off.

She laughed, low in her throat, and tugged my shirt up over my head and dropped it over the side.

The October air was cold on my chest.

I did not feel it.

She stood in front of me in the moonlight, five foot one in her socks.

Her father's hat was pushed back on her head, and her green blouse was half undone.

I had spent twelve years in Montana and the Panhandle with big animals.

I knew what it was to be careful with a thing much smaller than I was.

I put my hands on her waist and kept them still.

"You can touch me," she said.

"I know."

"You've been so careful all day."

"I'm still being careful," I said.

"Don't. Not out here."

I pulled her blouse off her shoulders.

Under it was a plain white bra, and she reached behind her back and undid it herself, and I stopped breathing.

I had thought about her breasts in the barn lot in July, when she bent over a stall door.

They were full and soft with pink nipples drawn tight in the cold, and I took one in my mouth.

She gasped and put her hand on the back of my head.

I sucked and licked until she held my hair in both fists.

Then I moved to the other side and did the same.

"Cade," she said unsteadily. "The quilts."

I lifted her.

She came up off the ground into my arms with her legs around my waist.

I stepped up into the truck bed with her.

She weighed almost nothing, and it still undid me.
