Chapter 15: What the Cameras Heard

I took Brant's mate up to the thirtieth floor myself.

Ansel met us at the elevator in his shirtsleeves, took one look at the woman in green, and opened his office door.

"Wait for me, Brinley," he said. "Please. An hour."

"Don't make it two."

The woman went in, and the door closed.

I went to the war room, which was empty, and put my brother's file up on the long wall screen.

It was nine minutes of grey night, the north fence camera looking at a county road.

The trucks sat with their lights off.

At the edge of the frame my own truck rolled past with no headlights, and I watched myself drive straight by without a glance.

My throat closed.

Then the black wolf walked out of the trees and sat down in the road.

I had never seen him from outside.

He was enormous, and he sat in the dark with his head up, and the engines of the Blood Ridge trucks went quiet one after another.

The cheap cameras my brothers had bought recorded sound.

A man's voice came through the speaker, flat and low.

"That's him. He's sitting in the road."

"Then take the girl at the pines," said Alpha Colter. "She'll be across in a minute. Midnight's gone, and the Crown can't hold her."

"Sir, that's the King."

"I know exactly who it is."

Nobody moved.

On the screen the black wolf looked straight into the lens, and for a moment I felt his eyes on me through the lens.

The trucks turned around and went back up the road.

I let out a sound that wasn't a word.

I was still standing there when the door behind me opened.

"Dessa says you watched it," Ansel said.

"Four times."

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."

"You told me that already." I turned around. "You sat in the road in front of a hundred wolves and you let me drive past you with my headlights off. You didn't even honk."
