Chapter 4: Door Duty

Door duty turned out to be the best job I had ever had.

I stood at the black desk for four hours and sniffed three hundred wolves.

A courier from Texas tried to bring in a raw ham and lied about it.

A pair of Alpha cousins from Montana called me "sweetheart," and I told them my name was Warden Rowe.

They apologized so fast that the guard coughed into his mug.

By the third day Dessa leaned on the desk next to me and watched me work.

"You're good at this," she said.

"I spent a year learning how to tell when nobody wants me in the room."

"That's not a skill. That's a wound."

"It's both," I said.

She grinned, and the grin went out of her face again.

"The list said nine days, and three are gone," she said. "The Council sits in six." "The Alphas get here early and pick fights in the hall. I can put you on the Hollow floor for the whole week. No one would say a word."

"Is that an offer or an order?"

"An offer. The orders come from upstairs."

"No," I said.

"You don't know who's coming."

"I read the list, Dessa. I know exactly who's coming."

She looked at me for a while.

"Then you'll want to hit something before they do," she said. "Come on. The mat's free."

The training room was on the fourth floor, with high windows and a floor of blue mats.

I had been there ten minutes, working a bag until my knuckles ached, when the door opened behind me.
