Chapter 11: The Line

"I can't," I said. "It's cut. And I wouldn't."

My father stayed on his knees.

"Thora..."

"Get up, Dad. Get up and stand with your pack."

He got up.

It took him two tries, and Joss came out of the crowd and put a hand under his elbow.

I looked at the dirt road, the school with its broken door and the three hundred wolves.

At the far end of the lawn stood the stone, where the torches had been.

"Everyone to the lawn," I said.

They went.

Nobody argued.

I walked to the Claiming Stone in a Crown guard's coat with my feet bare and stepped up onto it.

It was the only high ground in the valley.

It was still warm.

The whole pack gathered in a ring around it, the same ring as before.

The Crown guards stood at the edges with Caspian among them, not stepping forward.

He had told me on the road he wouldn't.

He had said it was mine.

I looked down at them.

"Two nights ago I stood here with my hands open," I said.

"Three hundred of you watched a man reject me.

"The elder struck my name, and nobody here said a word."

Nobody moved.

"I'm not going to shout at you. I'm going to ask. One at a time. I want each person who stood close to me to say what they did."

I found my father.

"Alpha Haldane."

He was gray in the face, with the iron bar's blood still on his hands.

"I stood three steps from you and I did not growl," he said. Every word cost him. "A man shamed my daughter in front of my pack, and I let him walk away, because I was afraid of a war. I told my sons to stand down. Then I struck your name myself."
