Chapter 19: The Court of the Thirtieth Day
On the thirtieth day the whole north came to Highcrest.
Forty Alphas sat in the long hall, and behind every Alpha his pack stood three deep along the walls.
More packs crowded the lawn outside, with the doors thrown open so they could hear.
The housekeeper said three thousand wolves had come.
I believed her.
I stood at the foot of the dais in the green dress from the Midsummer dinner, with my wrists bare, and my five brothers stood in a row behind me.
The youngest was already growling, very quietly, as a rehearsal.
"Not yet," Joss whispered.
"I'm warming up."
"You'll pull something."
Caspian sat in the high chair in his plain black suit.
He hadn't touched me since the council table, in front of anyone, and I could feel the effort of it from thirty feet away.
The clerk read the charge.
"That Caspian Lorne, King of the Lycans, knowingly concealed from the Council a lycan daughter whose wolf had woken, contrary to the statute of the late King."
The Stonefall Alpha sat on the left in the front row, with Brant beside him.
Brant wouldn't look at me.
"Majesty," the clerk said. "How do you answer?"
Caspian stood.
I expected a speech.
He took the Crown's seal out of his pocket, an iron stamp on a plain leather cord, and set it down on the arm of the high chair.
"I knew," he said. "I knew from the night her wolf woke. I did not tell the Council, and I did not tell her, and I was wrong to do both."
