Chapter 18: The Lion Hall
Darek was moving before the chief's back cleared the ring.
I caught his arm, and it was slick with blood.
"Wait."
"He has my son."
"He has a hall full of gray hunters and a head start.
If you shift now you'll bleed out on his steps."
"Then I bleed."
"No," I said.
"We walk in."
He stared at me, panting.
The white-browed elder had come up beside us, leaning on his staff.
"The lion hall is closed to every den but its own," he said.
"The council cannot breach it tonight."
"The old law," Hesper boomed from behind me.
"A parent's right of the door.
Any mother or father may walk into any den in the Ashmark to claim their cub.
No chief can bar them."
The elder's mouth opened and shut.
"That is so," he said.
"For the parents alone."
"Then it's the two of us," I said.
Darek pulled on a hunter's offered shirt, wincing.
His hand found mine and closed.
It was big and hot and not quite steady.
We walked up the switchback to the lion hall with the whole clan trailing behind us at a respectful distance.
