Chapter 7: The Green Case
Two of Dane's wolves hauled the truck out of the culvert with a chain at ten o'clock.
I sat on the tailgate of a flatbed with a blanket on my shoulders and my hands around a mug I did not remember being given.
Dane stood ten feet away, talking low to a man in a hooded jacket.
When they finished, he came back.
"The rogue is at the lodge gate," he said. "He has six wolves with him, and they aren't mine."
"What does he want?"
"He says he wants what's owed."
"What's owed by me?"
Dane looked at the mug in my hands, and then at my face.
"You'll stay in the truck."
"I won't."
"Lara."
"I walked into a room full of foxes yesterday," I said. "I can walk up to one wolf."
He closed his eyes for a second.
"Then you stand behind me," he said, "and you do exactly what I say."
"I'll stand next to you."
"Behind me."
"Next to you, Dane."
He lowered his chin, and I climbed down.
The lodge gate was lit with floodlights.
Seven wolves stood in the road in human shape, with their hands loose and their coats open to the freezing rain.
The one in front was a gaunt man with a gray beard and one milky eye.
He smiled when he saw me.
"There she is," he said. "The little vet."
"Do I know you?"
"You've never seen my face. I've seen yours. October, seven years ago, in a hollow off Eagle Creek." He licked his lip. "You shouldn't have got in the way."
My knees went cold.
I had never told anyone about that night, not even Penny.
