I looked at the carnations on her stone.
Then I picked them up and handed them back to him.
"She liked carnations because they last," I said. "You don't."
I walked down the hill.
I didn't run. I wanted to, and I didn't.
Wells was out of the van before I reached the gate. He'd been standing by the door the whole time with his arms folded.
"Well?" he said.
"He confessed."
"To what?"
"Everything. To her." I nodded up the hill. "And then he told me to keep my mouth shut, or I'll never get my mother's money back."
Wells looked up the hill.
Kellan was still standing there, small and white-shirted under the maple.
"Get in the van," Wells said quietly. "Before I do something with my hands."
I got in the van.
For three weeks I didn't decide anything.
I did a baby shower in Queen Village. I did the sixtieth birthday party for the tattoo girls' mother, eighty people, and she cried over the centerpieces.
The thirty days on my door started running on August first. I didn't pack one thing.
On the first Tuesday in August, at Maggie's, I opened my mother's sewing box for the first time since the wedding.
