Chapter 5: Getaway

"That's for the couple," I said.

"You're the couple."

"There's no couple."

"Then you're the whole couple." He started walking. "Loading dock. Left. Mind the mop."

I followed him because my feet didn't know what else to do.

The car was parked by the dumpsters.

A cream vintage Rolls-Royce with white ribbons on the hood and JUST MARRIED on a sign across the back.

I stopped.

Wells looked at the sign. He looked at me.

He walked around the back, tore it off with one pull and dropped it in the dumpster.

Then he opened the passenger door.

"Where to?"

"I don't know."

"Wrong. You know."

I thought about the apartment, with Larissa's hair on my towel.

"My shop," I said. "Fishtown."

"Good."

It took me three tries to get the dress into the car.

He didn't help.

He waited, looking at the sky.

I was grateful for that.

He drove like he did everything, smooth and a little under the limit.

My phone was going off in my lap.

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

I turned it over.

Two hundred and six notifications.

Somebody had already posted the video. It had a title. It was called "BRIDE READS VOWS TO MISTRESS."

"Don't look at that," Wells said.

"It has forty thousand views."

"It'll have a million by dinner. Don't look at it."

I put the phone face down.

We stopped at a red light on Delaware Avenue. A guy in a pickup next to us honked and gave me a thumbs-up.

"Congratulations!" he yelled.

"Thank you!" I yelled back.

Wells made a sound. It took me a second to realize it was a laugh.

"You changed the poster," I said.

"You asked me to."

"You didn't ask why."

"Nobody types the maid of honor's name by accident." He changed lanes. "Not that late at night."
