Chapter 10: Her Other Victim

Wren had not slept.

Jonas had said he would tell her that night.

By six the next morning he had not called.

She was punching down bread dough with more force than the dough deserved.

"Wren," the baker said from the doorway. "Customer. She says she's here for her tasting."

Camille Dray stood at the glass case in her camel coat, holding two paper cups of tea.

"I didn't know what you could drink," she said. "So I brought chamomile and ginger."

"You didn't have to."

"I know." She set both cups on the counter. "Is there somewhere we can talk without a line watching?"

They sat in the back, on flour sacks, with a sheet cake cooling between them.

Camille did not touch the cake.

"Jonas called me at midnight," she said. "He asked me one question. He asked what his mother paid me."

Wren put down her tea.

"What did she pay you?"

"Five years ago, my little sister got sick. Leukemia, the bad kind."

Camille spoke steadily.

"We had no insurance and no savings. Margaret Pryce found out somehow. She came to the hospital in person and said she wanted to help."

"She paid?"

"All of it. The first round of treatment, the bone marrow match, a private room."

"In return, I signed a paper. I would leave Ravenport and never contact Jonas for five years."

"You signed it."

"I was twenty-six and my sister was dying. I'd have signed anything."
