Chapter 11: Private Room

Section 2 held its quarter-end party at an izakaya in Kanda with a rule that nobody talked about the Daikoku pitch.

By nine, everyone was talking about the Daikoku pitch.

Gojo sat at the head of the long table with his tie around his forehead.

He had a beer in each hand and a speech about "my two tigers" that had already run for five minutes.

"Tigers!" he said. "Look at them! Six years! I put them at facing desks and not a drop of blood!"

"There's blood," Chihiro said from Tomoya's left. "It's invisible."

Across the table Ren sat very straight with a glass of barley tea.

He had drunk nothing.

He kept his eyes on a skewer and not on Tomoya.

Tomoya was on his third whisky highball, and he could feel every inch of the table between them.

The trouble was the new hire from Section 3.

He was twenty-five, pink-cheeked and cheerful.

He had been sitting next to Tomoya for forty minutes, telling him he was a legend.

"I read your Hot Morning case study at university," he said. "Honestly, Arisaka-san, it's why I applied."

"That's nice."

"Can I have a photo with you?"

He had his phone out already.

He held it up, leaned in against Tomoya's shoulder, and put one warm hand on Tomoya's knee under the table to steady himself.

Tomoya smiled for the camera.
