Chapter 23: First Order of Business
Nobody said anything for a long moment.
Gojo had stopped blowing his nose.
Okabe had stopped writing.
"Director," Tomoya said, because the words were already coming, and if he stopped he would never start again. "Okabe-san. I declare for the record that Ren Kisaragi and I are in a relationship."
Ren turned his head.
"It started before the contest was set, in the sense that matters. I should have declared it the day I found out. I'm declaring it now, as the new Section Chief, before I give a single order to anyone."
"Arisaka," Gojo said.
"I can't be his boss. I won't be. I'm asking that he not report to me, and I'm asking it before anyone asks me to."
Tomoya looked at Ren.
Ren was standing very still, white to the lips.
"And I'm not going to ask him to transfer," Tomoya said. "That's the one thing I wasn't going to do."
Okabe laid her pen down.
"Director Gojo," she said. "I believe you have something prepared."
Gojo blew his nose a final time.
"I do," he said. "I had hoped to give it to the winner at a more dignified moment."
He reached into his jacket and took out an envelope.
"Last night, after Okabe-san's call, I drafted a new post. The Daikoku Kansai liaison team. One lead, reporting to me and to nobody in Section 2. It covers every Daikoku store west of Nagoya. The title is equal to a section chief." He held it out to Ren. "It needed a name. I thought of a man who visits Store 214 once a month and keeps a notebook."
