Chapter 20: His Father
The doors swung shut behind Brodie.
The reading room sat there for a second in the quiet he'd left.
Then somebody started typing again, and somebody else, and it was a library.
The girl with the earbuds put them back in.
She gave Noah a thumbs-up first.
The librarian put a cup of tea on his desk that he hadn't asked for.
"Lemon slice in the staff room," she said. "Go and have some."
He went and had some.
His hands started shaking in the staff room, over the sink, ten minutes after it was all over.
He let them.
That afternoon he wrote Damian one text.
Brodie says the vote's Thursday.
Damian answered in under a minute.
I know. I'll be there.
Nothing else.
On Tuesday afternoon the team had their first training.
The oval was right below the library windows.
Noah didn't go to the window.
Bec did.
She stood there with a trolley of returns for forty minutes and gave him reports in a low voice.
"He's running. He's not limping."
"He's doing the cones."
"Brodie's yelling. Nobody's listening to Brodie."
"They've stopped. They're in a circle."
