Chapter 10: Say My Name

Anders opened the loft door before Teddy knocked.

He stood in the doorway in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled and his hair uncombed, and his eyes were red-rimmed and perfectly calm.

It was seven in the morning.

"Nineteen calls," Teddy said.

"Twenty-one."

"I turned my phone off."

"I noticed." Anders stepped back to let him in. "Close the door."

Teddy closed it.

The loft was gray with early light, and the river was a sheet of pewter in the windows.

He stood in the middle of the floor in yesterday's jeans and the hockey sweatshirt he'd borrowed off Zack's chair without thinking.

Anders looked at the sweatshirt.

"Rule three," he said quietly. "You answer when I call."

"I know."

"You chose not to."

"I chose not to." Teddy lifted his chin. "I was with a friend. It was a Saturday night and I'm twenty. I'm not going to apologize for that."

"I didn't ask you to," Anders said.

"Then what are you doing?"

"Counting."

Anders walked toward him, slowly, and stopped close enough that Teddy had to tip his head back.

He lifted the hem of the borrowed sweatshirt to his face and breathed in.
