Zack Halvorsen drove four hours north on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, through snow, with the heat broken.
He had not slept in two weeks.
He had not texted Teddy once.
He told himself that was respect.
It was cowardice, and he knew it by the time he passed Hinckley.
Duluth was white and black, the lake grey and heavy under the sky, and the lift bridge standing over it in the dusk.
He went home, said hello to his mother, and ate three plates of food and tasted none of it.
Then he walked down to the pier.
It was the one in the photo.
It was forty feet of old wood going out into Lake Superior, with the ice already forming at its edges.
Two boys had stood there at fourteen in their hockey jackets while Teddy's mother took a picture.
Zack had given a print of it to Anders in the first month, because Anders had asked him what he was like as a kid.
Anders had never given it back.
He had kept it on a shelf, turned a little away.
