Chapter 16: Scandal

Three photographers waited outside the bike shop on Sunday morning, and one of them shouted Teddy's name.

He went out the back, over the fence, and across two alleys in the cold.

By noon the university had emailed him a polite note asking him to come in and discuss "recent public reports".

By one, Mulligan's owner had called to say he could stay on the schedule and the pub would deal with the cameras.

By two, his mother had phoned from Duluth.

"Is it true?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Is he good to you?"

Teddy stood in the stairwell with his forehead against the wall.

"Yes," he said. "He is."

"Then I don't care what the newspaper says. Eat something."

He took the car Anders sent, and a hat pulled low.

The loft was dark except for the lamp by the couch, and the city glittering below the iron windows.

Anders was on the leather in his shirtsleeves, with a laptop closed on his knee and a letter on the table in front of him.

He stood up.

"I've drafted my resignation," he said.

Teddy stopped in the middle of the floor.

"What?"

"The board votes on Wednesday on my conduct. Kellan has five of the nine." Anders's voice was level. "If I step down first, they'll leave your name out of it. I've spoken to the lawyers. It spares you."
