Chapter 16: The Vote

"Please," Savannah said, and her voice broke on it. "I want to say that Solveig is not herself."

Her eyes were wet and wide.

She looked at the four old men one at a time.

"She's been under so much strain. Warner and I love her. We only want her to be safe, and we're having a baby, and none of us wants this to be a fight."

It was the voice she had used on me for eleven years.

I felt the old pull of it, the wish to say it was all right.

Bernadette snapped her handbag open.

"Sit down, dear," she said. "I've something to play for the room."

She set an old phone with a cracked corner on the table and slid it into the middle, next to the conference speaker.

"You left this in my kitchen in August," she told Savannah. "You asked me to give it to the church sale. I was too slow to find the church."

"That's mine," Savannah said. "Give it to me."

Bernadette pressed the screen.

A man's voice came out of the speaker, dry and patient.

"Is she still sleeping soundly, Savannah?"

Savannah's own voice answered, light and girlish, and I knew the room she was in.

It was the guest room at Linden Street, with the blue mug on the nightstand.

"She tells me everything, Daddy. The forty percent is only in her name for the taxes. She'd sign anything I put in front of her. She'd thank me for the pen."
