Chapter 19: The Rule
On Friday night I sent for him. I texted: Come up.
He knocked at ten, and I opened the suite door in a black dress and bare feet.
He stood in the hall with his coat on and looked at the carpet, not at me.
"Solveig."
"Inside."
He came in, and I shut the door and turned the lock.
He stayed by it, with his back almost touching the wood.
"I read all of it," I said. "Twice. You didn't ask me for anything."
"I had no right to."
"That's true."
He lifted his head then.
His grey eyes were tired and hard, and he had decided to be cruel to himself before I could do it for him.
"Let's be exact," he said. "Our terms were to beat Warner, and nothing else. He's beaten. You have your company and your vote. You don't owe me a night or a rule."
"Declan."
"No questions about before. That was yours. You broke it in bed, and I answered you with a lie. So we're even. You can go back to Linden Street with a clear conscience."
He gave me a small, polite smile.
"Thank you for the fun," he said.
I crossed the room and put both hands flat on his chest.
I pushed him back against the door, hard enough that his head hit the wood.
"Then I owe you no rule," I said.
His breath stopped.
"You said it. Our deal was nothing else. Fine. I'm done keeping it. Tell me to stop."
"Solveig."
"Tell me."
"Never," he said, hoarse. "God. Never."
I took his mouth.
It was not gentle.
I bit his lower lip until he groaned, and I shoved his coat off his shoulders and let it fall.
His hands came up to my waist and hovered.
