Chapter 22: Bernadette's Table
Bernadette set four places at the dining table in Edina, with the good plates and the glass dome of the lemon cake in the middle.
She had asked Declan to come, and he stood in the doorway in a clean shirt, not sure where to put his hands.
"Sit there," she told him. "Next to Solveig. You're a Tilden guest tonight, and that is a promotion."
Warner arrived at seven in his own car.
His suit was creased, and he had not shaved.
He stopped at the dining room door when he saw the table.
"Mother," he said. "I thought we could talk alone."
"We're family. Sit."
He sat at the end, across from me, and did not look at Declan.
Bernadette served the roast herself and passed the potatoes.
"Eat," she said.
"I'm not hungry."
"Then watch."
Nobody spoke for a few minutes.
Declan ate carefully.
I kept my hand on my fork so it would not shake.
"I'll say it plainly," Bernadette said at last. "Your father would be ashamed of what you did, and so am I."
"Mother, they set me up. Savannah's father used me."
"Savannah's father used you because you were easy to use." She put her knife down. "When your father died, you asked me what the will said before you asked if I'd eaten. I told myself it was grief. It was you."
Warner's jaw worked.
"I came here because I have nothing. I'm your son."
"You are. That's why I'm not going to give you money."
"Mother."
"There is a room over the garage. You may have it for ninety days. The night dock at the yard needs a dispatcher, at an hourly wage, starting Wednesday, and Solveig has agreed to let you have it."
