Chapter 29: Two Men and a Grill
I brought the potato salad on Saturday like I was told.
On Sunday at four thirty I was parked across the street from my dad's bungalow with my seat pushed all the way back.
I could see the smoke from the grill over the fence.
I could not hear a thing.
At four forty the side gate opened.
My dad walked across the street in his CTA jacket and knocked on my window with the tongs.
I rolled it down.
"I said don't come."
"I didn't come. I'm parked."
"You've been parked for ten minutes. The neighbor called me." He jerked his head at the house. "Kitchen. Window's open. You can listen. You can't talk."
"Dad."
"And you're peeling carrots. I'm not feeding a spy for free."
So I stood at my mother's sink with a peeler and a bag of carrots, and the kitchen window open over the yard.
Leon was at the grill.
He was in jeans and a T-shirt, the first time I'd ever seen him in a T-shirt, and he was turning brats very carefully.
