Chapter 31: The Move
I closed my hand around the key.
"I'm keeping my apartment," I said.
He nodded. He didn't let anything show.
"My lease in Bridgeport runs till September," I said. "I'm keeping it till then. I'm going to pay my own rent and fight with my own radiator."
"Okay."
"And I'm going to write in that second bedroom so often you'll forget it was ever yours."
He let his breath out.
"Is that a yes?"
"It's a September," I said. "Ask me again then. In front of Pip."
I put the key on my own key ring, right there in the bed, next to my dad's spare and the one to the studio.
He watched me do it.
On Saturday my dad backed his pickup into the loading zone on the river at seven in the morning.
The boxes from Denver were in the bed, under a tarp.
"That's it?" my dad said. "Thirty-four years?"
"I travel light," Leon said.
"You travel like a man in witness protection."
Pip came at eight with her girlfriend and a lamp nobody had asked for.
