Chapter 6: The Photo
The HR room on thirty-one has no windows.
It has a round table, a box of tissues, and a poster about lifting with your knees.
At nine on Tuesday there were five of us around that table.
The HR director, with a printed copy of the photo face down in front of her.
Lyle, in a fresh blazer, looking sorry for everyone.
Norma, in her camel coat, gloves in her lap.
Leon, at the far side, in black.
Me.
"Let's keep this calm," the HR director said. "Nobody's in trouble yet. We're just gathering facts."
She turned the photo over.
In the light of the HR room it looked worse. My shoulder bare. My fist in his tie. Eleven twelve p.m.
Norma looked at it.
"Della," the HR director said, "can you tell us who's in this picture?"
"Me," I said. "And Leon."
Lyle made a small sad noise.
"And can you tell us what was happening?"
"He was kissing me. I was kissing him back."
The HR director wrote something down.
Her pen was shaking a little.
"Was this the first time?"
"No."
"How long has this been going on?"
"Since November twentieth. We met in a hotel bar. I didn't know who he was. He didn't know where I worked."
Norma laughed, one short note.
"Oh, please."
"I didn't know his last name until he walked into the big room on Friday," I said to her.
The HR director cleared her throat.
"So you'd describe this as a personal relationship that began before Mr. Winship had any role at the company."
"Yes."
"And it's ongoing?"
"No. I ended it in the stairwell on Friday."
Lyle looked at Leon, then at me, and something mean and happy went across his face.
"Della," the HR director said gently, "I have to ask. Do you want to characterize the night in this photo as a mistake? A lapse? Something you regret?"
