On Thursday I turned the loft into a test lab.
The unit I had bought stood against the brick.
On the drafting table sat the console Margot had rebuilt from spare parts.
She had found the kill code in her head and typed it out in forty lines.
I read every one.
"It's elegant," I said.
"It's disgusting."
"It's both."
"What do you need?"
"A copper mesh, a sewing machine, and an hour."
Dot owned a Singer, and she hauled it up the stairs with her face set.
I cut a long grey slip out of the conductive thread I use for shielding sensor rigs.
It looked like a bathrobe made of chain mail.
I fitted it over the unit with Margot's face, pinned the seam at her hip, and sewed it with my own hands.
