Chapter 7: Book Club
My mother held her book club every second Thursday at eleven, and she had never once cancelled it.
I arrived at five past, with Theo asleep in a carrier on my chest and Finbar two steps behind me carrying a laptop.
Her housekeeper opened the door and did not know what to do with her face.
"Mrs. Hungerford is hosting," she whispered.
"I know," I said. "I'm family."
Twelve women sat in my mother's living room with coffee cups and lemon cake.
They all turned when I came in.
My mother stood by the window in a cream cardigan, a silver pot in her hand.
For one second she was only a tired woman who had lost her daughter to the police.
Then she saw who stood behind me.
"Willa. Darling. This isn't a good time."
"It's the best time," I said. "Everyone's here."
I looked at the guests.
"I'm sorry to interrupt. My mother has been telling people that I pushed my sister down our stairs. I'd like you to see what happened, so that you don't have to take either of our words for it."
"There's no need," my mother said.
"I think there is."
Finbar had already set the laptop on the coffee table and connected it to the television over the fireplace.
I pressed play.
They watched my sister climb the stairs and take the packet from her dress.
They watched her squeeze it against her stomach and throw herself down with her eyes on the closed nursery door.
One of the women set her cup down so hard it rattled.
