Chapter 9: Kylie at the Door
I let her in as far as the kitchen.
I did not let her near the stairs.
Kylie sat on a stool with a bag of frozen peas against her cheek, and Finbar stood in the doorway with his arms folded.
She glanced at him once.
"Is he recording?"
"Yes," Finbar said.
"Good." Her voice shook. "I want it recorded."
I put Theo into the bassinet by the counter and stood between them.
"You have until the peas thaw," I said.
She took a long breath.
"It was Mom's idea."
I waited.
"All of it. The pearls, the stairs, the pregnancy. She came up with it in the spring and told me exactly what to say, down to the word eleven."
"Eleven weeks."
"She said nobody checks until the hospital, and by then the stress would explain everything." She let out a laugh that broke in the middle. "She said Brynn would be the witness. She drew the staircase on a napkin."
"Did she say why?"
"The money. Gran's trust."
"She wanted the trust," I said. "And you?"
Kylie pressed her lips together.
"I wanted the house on Larkspur Hill," she said at last. "She promised it to me. She said I'd be the one with a home that Gran couldn't take away."
"Gran never took anything away from you."
"Gran never gave me anything!"
"She gave you every birthday."
"She gave me a card." Her voice cracked. "She gave you the pearls. Dad gave you his name. I was the one Mom picked up from a county office when I was six, and she never let me forget it."
