Chapter 15: The Steps

"On what grounds?" I said.

"Your face is on every screen in Boston, Commander. You've made yourself a target, and every one of our people with you."

"I didn't put it there."

"The board doesn't care who put it there. Hand command to your second by noon, and stay away from the press."

"I'll hand him the keys," I said. "I won't stay away from anything."

I hung up.

Roisin was still holding her phone with Marguerite's face frozen on it.

"They suspended you," she said. "Because of her."

"Because of my face."

"Which she put on TV because of me."

"Roisin."

"No. Don't 'Roisin' me." She stood up off the couch with the quilt still around her shoulders. "Go look out the window."

I went to the front window and lifted the blind.

There were two news vans parked on Dorchester Avenue.

Down on the sidewalk, under the plywood where the glass had been, a cameraman was setting up a tripod pointed at our door.

"They want the extortionist," Roisin said behind me. "Let's give them one."

At eight o'clock, two men in work shirts were carrying a new pane of glass off a truck.
