Chapter 5: Milk First

I wore the only dress I owned, a black one I'd bought for a funeral in Norfolk.

Roisin said I looked like I was going to arrest someone.

"Maybe I am," I said.

The housekeeper who opened the Ellery door looked at me and then at the card in Roisin's hand.

"Mrs. Ellery said Miss Keane would come alone."

"Mrs. Ellery was wrong," I said, and walked in.

The sitting room was all pale silk and glass.

Marguerite sat by the fire with a silver tea tray in front of her.

She didn't stand.

"I see you brought the help," she said.

"I see you kept the furniture," I said. "Your son's going to need to sell some of it."

Her eyes came to me and stayed.

Then they went back to Roisin.

"Sit, please. Both of you."

We sat.

She poured.

She poured Roisin's milk into the cup first, then the tea, and handed it over without asking.

Roisin took it automatically.

She always takes it that way.

She has since she was a little kid, and I've never seen anyone else do it.

"There are cakes," Marguerite said. "Lemon and ginger. No almonds."

Roisin looked up.

"I'm allergic to almonds," she said slowly.

"I asked around."

"Who did you ask?"

Marguerite smiled with her mouth only.

"I'll be brief, Roisin, because I think we both want this to end." She took a folder from the side table and set it on the tray. "Inside is a check for two hundred thousand dollars."

Roisin didn't move.

"There's also an agreement. You won't speak about Thayer, this family, or this pregnancy, to anyone, ever." She turned a page. "And there's an appointment at a private clinic in Newton on Tuesday. It's very discreet. I've paid for that too."
