Chapter 12: Let Him Watch
Willa did not sit.
She walked out of the dining room, through the kitchen, past the startled cook, and out the back door into the cold.
The garden was dark. Frost lay on the lawn and the old rose bushes were bare.
She walked to the end of the gravel path and stopped under the oak.
She heard the door open behind her and footsteps on the stones.
"Don't," she said.
"I'm not going to touch you."
Jasper stopped a few yards off.
His coat was open. He did not look at all like the man in the corridor.
"Tell me," she said. "Now. The truth about that dinner. You owe me that."
"I owe you more."
"Then start."
"I opened my grandfather's safe on Wednesday morning," he said. "Before that I knew only that your grandfather had written to me a dozen times in a month. I didn't know why."
"And after?"
"There was a pact inside. Signed twenty-six years ago, by him and by Ambrose. The Quarles heir marries a Tarleton granddaughter before Ambrose is eighty."
"Wednesday."
"Yes."
"You had that on Wednesday. And on Friday you fed me lamb."
He took it.
"Yes," he said.
"And you took me in the shower, knowing."
"Yes."
She hit him.
It was not hard, and she knew it as soon as she did it. The flat of her hand landed on his chest, and his coat took most of it.
He didn't move.
"I wanted to tell you," he said. "I said ask me in a week. I wanted time to see how you reacted. I didn't know if he'd really do it. I didn't think he'd stand up and say it in front of your family."
