Chapter 21: Her Sister's Soup

Dinner at the Corwin house was set for four.

White cloth, good china, a vase of winter roses.

Daphne sat at the head of the table in a soft gray dress and ladled soup into each bowl herself.

"Chicken and barley," she said. "Willa's favorite."

Nobody picked up a spoon.

Nolan sat on her left. Jasper sat across from Willa with his hands flat on the cloth.

"I asked a friend at the Silver Oak Grand," said Daphne, in her gentlest voice. "A girl who used to work for Mom. I wondered what it meant, a term."

Willa did not move.

"She said the suite has a rule. Ninety days and a check." Daphne tilted her head. "She said you've never kept one past the date, Mr. Quarles."

"That's true," said Jasper.

"And my sister walked in last month and asked for the job."

"She did."

"I'm sure there's a reason," said Daphne. She turned to Willa, and her eyes were wet. "Oh, Willa. Was it the cottage? Why didn't you come to me?"

"I didn't want to."

"I would have found the money. I'd have sold my pearls."

It was exactly the right thing to say, and every word was warm.

Willa looked at her sister's face and could not find anything in it that was false.

"I haven't told Grandpa," Daphne went on. "Of course I haven't. He'd be so hurt. I only want to be sure we're all being honest with each other, so that nothing awful happens on Sunday."

"What happens on Sunday?" said Nolan.

His voice was quiet.

"Grandpa has booked a minister." Daphne smiled. "He told me this afternoon. Right after the christening, in the drawing room, in front of everyone. A real ceremony. The paperwork is signed. He thinks you'll be too proud to stop him in front of two hundred guests."
