Chapter 32: The Blue Door
On the first Saturday in May, Willa was up at five, cooking her own wedding lunch.
Her mother had told her this was bad luck. Auntie had told her it was a scandal.
Willa had told them both to hand her the onions.
By eight the kitchen smelled of rosemary and lamb. Trestle tables stood in the garden under the apple tree, and the blossom was coming down in the wind.
Her dress hung on the back of the pantry door in a cloud of cream silk.
She wore an apron over her slip, and her hair was half pinned.
Someone knocked on the blue door.
Her mother looked up from the bread. Auntie put down her spoon.
"It's the groom," said Auntie, with deep satisfaction. "He's not allowed."
"He wouldn't dare," said her mother.
The knock came again, three raps, patient and polite.
Willa wiped her hands.
She crossed the kitchen and opened the door a hand's width, and then she opened it all the way.
Jasper stood on the step in a dark suit. He held a single sheet of paper.
His hair was combed, and his eyes were not steady.
"Mr. Quarles," she said. "It's bad luck to see the bride."
"I'm told your grandmother wouldn't have cared."
"She'd have thrown a shoe."
"May I come in?"
"State your business."
He glanced down at the paper, and she saw that his hand shook.
"I'm here about the position," he said.
Behind her, Auntie made a strangled noise and turned to the stove.
"Which position?"
"The one that's open. I understand the last holder moved on." His mouth twitched. "I'd like to apply."
