Chapter 13: The Real Heir

Nobody answered Mother for a long moment.

Then the oldest of my grandfather's captains pushed back his chair and stood.

He was a thin man with a white mustache, and he had taught me to play scopa under this table when I was six.

"Signora," he said to Mother, "Ugo's heir is already in the room. She is sitting at the head of the table."

The second captain stood beside him.

The third kept his arms folded and studied his plate.

Mother turned to Father, and Father said nothing at all.

"Sit down, all of you," he said at last. "Cattaneo stands behind my daughter Fiorella and her child. Ask Adriano whose side the port is on."

Adriano let go of Fiorella's hand.

He took a folded paper from his jacket and laid it beside the bread basket.

"Roselli Harbor Capital owes my family's freight company nine million dollars," he said. "I signed the note myself. It's payable on demand, and I'm demanding it tonight."

Gaetano's face went grey.

"You told me we had until spring."

"You had Mirella's signature until spring."

I kept my voice level.

"Your father stripped you of the port seat in front of his captains, Adriano."

"He didn't strip my signature. The note is mine until he cancels it, and he hasn't."

Nobody spoke.

Father looked at the paper and did not touch it.

"The holding company pays it," I said.
