Chapter 4: For Your Own Good

Adriano shoved me aside with his forearm and pulled Fiorella in behind him.

My hip hit the corner of the dining table, and the room went white with pain.

He didn't turn around. He took her face in his hands. "Fiorella, did she cut you? Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, and tears ran down her face.

"It's my fault. Adriano, we have to stop lying to her."

I started to laugh, and it hurt my side.

"Finally. Are you ready to say it?"

I looked at her.

"For two years I chased every lead like a madwoman, and I thought something was wrong with my head."

"Was that funny to you?"

Fiorella was crying too hard to stand.

Adriano held her up and shouted at me, "That's enough! She was afraid you couldn't take it, so she kept it from you!"

Mother stepped in front of Fiorella.

"We did it for your own good."

I stopped moving.

Father spoke from the end of the table, and his face was dark.

"We've known for six months. Your sister has been cleaning up after you. The Cattaneo side was starting to notice, so we kept it quiet to protect the business."

They had not only known about the affair. They had treated hiding it as a duty to the family.

Every time I got close to evidence, Fiorella had told our parents, and they and Gaetano had made it disappear.
