Chapter 21: The Auction Floor
On Monday the auction opened at four, as it always did, and I was on my stool at the scale desk by ten of.
Nobody had told me not to come.
I didn't know what else to do with my hands.
The big floor was gray and wet, with the fluorescent tubes buzzing in the rafters and the first boats' lots laid out in rows of ice-packed crates.
Sixty buyers stood in their parkas.
Sixty captains stood in their rubber boots along the back wall.
I'd never seen so many.
On a Monday in June there should have been thirty.
I picked up my pencil and looked at the ledger and did not look at the door.
At four exactly the scale-house door banged open, and Vasco walked in.
He was in work clothes, canvas jacket and boots, and he had not shaved, and he'd clearly not been to bed.
He didn't look at me.
He walked the length of the floor, between the rows of crates, past the buyers, who made way for him.
Climbed the three steps to the auctioneer's platform.
It was a plain steel stage, six feet by six, with a scale built into it and a brass bell on a post.
He stood on the scale.
The indicator needle swung and settled on his weight.
