Chapter 23: Peonies

"It's my grandmother's band," Alistair said, in my mother's dining room, with snow melting on his shoulders. "It sat on my counter for a month. I didn't put it away."

"What's the box for?"

"I'm not asking you anything. It stays closed unless you tell me to open it."

Winnie said "oh my God" very softly into a pie.

Gwen stared into her lap, and my mother stood in the doorway with the carving knife.

"You came to a family Thanksgiving with a ring," I said.

"I came to a table you've invited me to. I was told to arrive at pie."

"By who?"

"Winnie."

"I like him," Winnie said. "He's punctual."

I took the box from his hands and held it closed.

"Not here," I said. "Not in my mother's dining room."

"Where?"

"I'll tell you when I know."

I knew by morning.

On the second Saturday in December, snow came down on Lincoln Square, and I closed Lasker Floral for the day.

Winnie and I filled it with white peonies, forced in the cooler since October, and branches of white quince, and we hung them from the ceiling in loose bunches.

The shop smelled of cold stems and wax.
