Chapter 18: Severance
The founder's office was on the top floor of the Ashgrove building, and it smelled of coffee and varnish.
A model sailboat in a glass case stood on the windowsill, and a real chart of Boston Harbor covered the wall behind his desk.
He had on a cardigan instead of a suit, and he looked older than he had at the dinner.
"Sit, Ms. Prendergast. Please."
Niall had driven her to the building and was waiting in the truck below, with a thermos and a paperback.
Maeve sat in the leather chair across the desk.
"You wanted to ask me something."
"I wanted to hear it from you before I heard it from him again." The founder folded his hands. "Mr. Mercer came to my house at midnight. He stood on my porch for twenty minutes before my wife let him in."
"What did he tell you?"
"Everything, in order." He turned the model boat on its stand by a quarter inch. "He told it very carefully. He wanted me to see that he was only a bystander."
"And did you?"
"I asked myself a question instead." The founder looked at her. "When he sat in this chair in March and told me his marriage was solid, was he lying then, or was he only a fool?"
"Both, I think."
"Yes. So do I."
She waited.
"Tell me about the signature," he said. "I'd like your version. I've heard his."
Maeve told him in plain, short sentences.
She told him her father had said no in the sunroom, and that the bank officer had gone pale over the signature.
She told him her mother had lied to the officer's face.
