Chapter 15: The Founders Gala

Hazel's POV

Preston held his Founders Gala on Thursday, in the ballroom of the hotel where he had proposed to me.

He did not send me an invitation. Maxwell's invitation had a plus-one line, and Maxwell wrote my name on it in pen.

I wore a green dress I'd bought myself and my grandmother's pearls, with the clasp turned to the front where I could feel it.

Maxwell had told me about the note on Sunday night, before I could hear it from anyone else.

I had been furious for exactly as long as it took to read the receipt. The man who was due at my parents' door that Monday had been told to stay home.

"You should have asked," I'd said.

"You would have said no."

"Yes."

"That's why I didn't ask," he'd said, and I had hated that I understood him.

Now he stood at my shoulder at the edge of the ballroom, in a black suit for once, with a hand not quite on my back.

Three hundred people were in the room, and I knew half of them.

They knew me, too. Heads turned and turned back.

A woman I had trained in accounting put a champagne flute in my hand and whispered, "Thank God you came."

Then the lights dipped and Preston walked up on the stage.

He looked rested.

"Friends," he said. "Lyle Group is a family company, and family is what I want to talk about tonight."
