Chapter 22: Sundays

I pulled a sweater over my nightshirt and went down the stairs with Hamish right behind me.

Through the glass of the front door, I could see Dalton.

He was kneeling on the porch boards in yesterday's suit, with a manila envelope in one hand.

His other hand was shut around something small.

He had not shaved.

The sun was just clearing the river.

The men from the yard were already pulling into the gravel lot beside the house, one pickup after another.

They saw him and slowed.

Not one of them got out.

I opened the door.

"Marina," Dalton said.

He didn't stand.

"You said eight," I said. "It's ten to."

"I couldn't sit in the car anymore."

His voice was rough, and he spoke to the boards as much as to me.

"I came to say one thing."

Hamish stepped out beside me and folded his arms.

He didn't speak.

"I never asked her," Dalton said. "Not once. Not about the baby, not about March, not about why she cried in my car. I wanted what she told me, so I took it." He swallowed. "And I never asked you either. Seven years. I never asked what you wanted. I decided, and I printed it, and I put it in a drawer."

I said nothing.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me. I don't think I get that." He held out the envelope. "This is the signed rescission. The court has it too. This is the dissolution agreement. I'm not contesting anything. You keep your shares, what's left of them, and the house goes to a trust for Ivy. I'm out of it."

"The house is yours."

"It was never mine. It was yours when your parents' farm paid for the first four." He tried to smile and could not. "I should have said that on Wednesday."

I took the envelope.

My hand did not shake.
