Chapter 6: Flower Girl
"What will he cost me?" I asked.
Hailey pressed her lips together.
She stood in the vestry with the baby on her shoulder and her chin up, and for the first time in my life I watched my little sister decide what to say.
"You don't even know his name," she said.
"His name is Hamish Rask."
"And you know where he came from?"
"I know you know who he is."
Her eyes flicked to the door.
"I'm not the one you should worry about," she said. "I'm trying to protect you. I'm your sister."
"You told me that in the delivery room."
The sweetness came back into her face.
She smiled, wet-eyed and hurt.
"You're upset with me," she said. "I understand. I just want you to be careful with strangers."
She turned and opened the door before I could answer.
Dalton was standing right outside it.
He had heard every word.
"Everything okay?" he said, looking at me, not at her.
"Everything is lovely," I said, and walked out past him.
Hamish was waiting at the church door with his hands in his jacket pockets.
He didn't ask.
He looked at my face and held the door open.
On Friday morning I stood in a bridal shop on Fifth Street with my arms out while a tailor pinned a borrowed dress at my waist.
It was ivory, simple, and a size too big.
Ivy sat on a velvet stool eating a pretzel, her legs swinging.
I was paying for the dress with a card I had to shield from the saleswoman.
The bell on the door rang.
"I thought I'd find you here," Dalton said.
He came in slowly, with his hands in his pockets and a smile for the saleswoman.
