Chapter 4: The Empty Room
Caleb and I pressed our backs to the wall beside the door and waited.
The lodge was so quiet I could hear water moving in the pipes.
I looked at him, and my eyes stung.
He was my first real boyfriend, and he had trusted me more than anyone he knew.
In my last life I had not protected him.
His family took him to Switzerland, and I heard he spent years there and never came all the way back.
I had said nothing while they packed him up.
Dad told me to be patient, and I was the daughter who always gave way.
Afterward I kept asking myself how long Bianca must have waited outside my door to know the exact second I left for the bathroom.

It was never an illness.
It was planned down to the second.
Caleb had been quiet beside me.
Now he reached into his bag and took out his phone.
He opened the door a crack, set the phone on the shelf by the wall with its camera facing the hall, and shut it again to a thin line.
"What's that for?" I whispered.
"The door," he said. "I told you. New place, new door."
